A puzzle is a picture taken apart then put back together, matching both contours and related picture parts, to recreate a predetermined coherent image.

The grid is a universal design frame that ensures harmony of relationships, balance of structural elements, conservation of effort, clarity of vision, and the organic generation of proportional, representational forms.

Ümi encourages the inventive construction of an infinite number of pictures, puzzled together with a set of visually congruent picture parts, that can be placed in any position—edge to edge & corner to corner—forming a boundary-less grid, by which patterns, words, images, figures, and compositions are created.

For players of all ages, Ümi tile sets are perfect for providing hands-on/minds-on instruction in design principles, for strengthening cognition, memory and problem-solving skills, and for developing communication strategies and image-making skills. 

Ümi can be used in formal learning environments, for direct instruction or as value-added brain-breaks.
